First ‘Renostermaan’ took place at local farm

For everyone else a full moon is such a spectacular sight and people absolutely love starring at the moon for hours but on the flip side rhino poachers don’t admire the moon, yet use it to their advantage.

Poachers use the light that the full moon provides to do their hideous crime of poaching rhino. The full moon took place from March 30 to April 1 and has developed the nickname of ‘poacher’s moon’ or ‘blood moon’ as that is when the rhinos normally die.

A non-profit organization, called Rhino Connect was established a couple of years ago to help private rhino owners with an anti poaching project over the full moon period.

The Rhino Connect NPO focuses on the protection and conservation of rhinos within the private sector in South Africa. Their motto is; ‘connecting creation through preventative conservation in aid of private rhino owners’.

Not only does the team from Rhino Connect work throughout the nights when it’s full moon, they also give the rhino owner’s emotional support and protection for the rhinos is the most important.

The certificate that all the Rhino Connect trackers received after the ‘Renostermaan’.

“It was our first time at this farm and we were all keen for this Renostermaan,” said Ms Jana Jooste (facilitator).

During the ‘Renostermaan’ people from Rhino Connect, teach the farm owner about how to look for poacher tracks, what clues to look for that a poacher is in the area and how they normally enter on a farm.

It was a long weekend for the team from Rhino Connect and the farm owner as they walked through the bush at night making sure all the rhinos were fine.

During the night they kept looking for poacher tracks and signs that poachers were in the area.

“It was great staying on this farm, the farm owner and his wife were so welcoming and the food and rooms were absolutely amazing. It is such a heart warming feeling on the farm,” said Jooste.
