‘Paws’ and think before you give your pet tap water

Residents in Ga-Nala started giving their pets bottled water after reported fish and probably bird deaths.

Ms Tanya and Mr George Curry sparked a conversation on social media after their birds died. The couple mentioned that their tap water smelled like bleach a few days ago and they were worried that the water could be responsible for their feathered children’s death.

They took one of the birds for an autopsy at a local vet in Bethal, but because the bird was frozen for to long he could not determine the exact cause of the bird’s death.

They commented that they started giving their dogs bottled water.

“We cleaned out and topped up our fishpond a few weeks ago and all my fish died,” said Ms Beverley Cilliers.

She lost 15 mini-koi fish. They had the fish for eight years without any problems.

Jason Snyman feeds his fish. The water in his fish tank has to pass three filters before it gets to his fish.

“I now have an empty fishpond and am too scared to refill it and put more fish in. Filled my sink this morning to do the dishes and once again got the same bleach smell,” she said.

The same happened to Ms Lizel de Bruyn whose fish all died after she cleaned their fish tank and filled it with tap water.

Mr Kingdom Mabuza, municipal spokesperson said that a team took water samples in different areas of the town and he will give feedback as soon as the municipality conducted the necessary tests.
