Role players take the lead on burning underground fires

Several role players are standing together to address the burning underground fires in Jackaroo Park.

On Tuesday, August 28, the local municipality, Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), a mining company, South African Community Crime Watch and the Hero Burn Foundation got together at the spot where Mr Ben Coetzee burned when he fell into a sinkhole.

“Our first step is to determine who the land belongs to, Mr Abram Magale, from disaster management said.

Mr Isaac Kgope from the DMR said he is going to kick-start his investigation by looking into the history of the piece of ground where the incident happened.

Uitspan Colliery, the company mining next to the ground where the incident happened is putting up sign boards warning people of the danger lurking beneath the ground. They are also going to place berms on the perimeter to keep people out of the area.


Mr Jaco Coetzee, Mr Francois Wolvaardt, Ms Gladys Mtsweni, Ms Henryette Jacobs and Mr Riaan van der Merwe.

Mr Riaan van der Merwe, an attorney said Hero Burn will take the legal matter up on behalf of Coetzee.

Hero Burn is a non-profit organisation who supports burn survivors and their families.
