Dagga, knives and guns – Now available at your local school

Ranging from over aged learners to dagga and firearms in schools, the struggle has become a daily one. On Thursday, September 6, another school was searched and the result is something to be frightened of.

This follows the article published on August 24 where schools are randomly searched for illegal substances, firearms and more.

Sgt David Ratau, media spokesperson said in the previous article that

“The parents bring their kids to the station saying that they are smoking dagga. We then go to the schools, enquiring about the problem and most dealers are not at school. They are ex learners who know the ‘ins and outs’ of the school. If the dealers know who split on them, their families are threatened to be beaten and tortured. The learners are given dagga to sell at school.”

In the latest search however, it has come to light that learners buy from dealers living in the area, not too far from the school.

The learners then either smoke the dagga or sell it to other learners.

A teacher said on Thursday

“most of them are high all the time.”

A grade 11-class that was searched had more than 80 learners in one class, and the oldest pupil being 25 years old, with a teacher of 23 years old.

In a schoolbag, a small ‘baggie’ was found and the learner was asked where he gets his stash from. He told police and they set out to the house but no one was home upon arrival. It is suspected that this learner has been bringing a firearm to school, but it was no where to be found when police enquired.

“This causes gangsterism in the schools. We have a big problem with that,” added Sgt Ratau.

Knives, dagga, matchboxes and cigarettes were amongst the items found during the search.

General William Kekana was part of the proceedings for the day, along with numerous police officials and members from the Community Policing Forum (CPF).

The General expressed his disdain about the situation and what was found at the school.
