Chaos at Klipfontein Dam

Efforts have been made to rehabilitate Klipfontein Dam, those efforts were wasted, on the first day of Spring.

Spring Day is a day celebrated for new growth, a change of the season as life begins anew – but this was not the case at Klipfontein Dam as the area was left abused, beaten, raped.

Taxis were seen driving with their side panel doors open, without regard for traffic regulations.

Hundreds of people flocked to Klipfontein Dam on September 1 for the annual spring bash.

Numerous complaints were expressed over social media and across communications platforms as the situation got somewhat out of hand.

The parking area of McDonalds close to Highveld Mall was blocked off as party goers sought out a bite.

Children as young as 13 years of age were reported to have taken to alcohol consumption. Meanwhile taxi’s, overburdened beyond the 14 passenger limit, took to the streets with side doors wide open, people drinking on board and cheering as the party continued.

“Where were the police and traffic officials?” Was the question on everyone’s minds after calls for intervention were met with the excuse that “There are no vehicles.”

The chaos continued into the late evening as what sounded like gunfire, but was suspected to have been fireworks or cars backfiring, was heard at Klipfontein Dam.

The entrance to Sun 1 Hotel near Klipfontein Dam was completely blocked off by party goers and vehicles.

In addition, high traffic volume reports were issued regarding the spring festivities that were taking place. People were warned to avoid Klipfontein Dam, Witbank Dam, and Highveld Mall as traffic congestion was exceedingly high.

“The Mall Management with the help of Fidelity Security Services and the SACCW had controlled access points to the Mall. At no stage were any of the Mall entrances blocked. After mall closure at 18:00 two of the three access gates were closed. Access control continued at the mall until 22:00. The mall traded normally from 09:00 to 17:00 and no violent incidents or injuries were reported on the day,” said Mr Henri Gouws, Highveld Mall Marketing Manager.
