Teenager dies at festival

A family’s search for their 15-year-old boy came to a grim end when they were informed days later that his body lay in the mortuary.

Thabang Phakamani Motau went missing on September 2. He was last seen at the spring festival celebrations which were held at Klipfontein Dam over the weekend of September 1 to 3.

After her son didn’t come home later that evening, Ms Nonhlanhla Motau, fearing the worst, sought help as to her son’s whereabouts.

Motau’s sister, Lisbeth contacted Ms Maureen Scheepers (SACCW Witbank) asking her to help put out a missing persons notice. Scheepers assisted her and advised the family they should report to the nearest police station.
The missing person’s case was opened at Vosman Police Station on Sunday September 3 and the search for young Thabang began.

Thabang Motau went missing on September 2 from Klipfontein Dam during the spring festival.

“He left home on Saturday at around 09:00 and told us that he was going to the dam with friends to welcome spring,” said Ms Motau.

On Thursday September 7, Witbank Police received a call from a security guard patrolling the area along the Old Ogies Road (R555) of a body which had been discovered near the N12 Highway.

Police forensics headed out to the scene where they discovered the body of a young man matching Thabang’s description. That evening they contacted Ms Motau asking her to come and identify the young man.
